Logo Design Tips

Logo design is complicated because every aspect of a service or a business is defined by the logo. It?s the single most important piece of promotional materials because the logo must reflect or at least be associated with the business. One of the most common mistakes virtually anyone can make is the non-associative logo. Learn about other common mistakes and some tips, so that your logo will effectively represent your needs.

#1. Don?t be too flashy!

Some start out with good, cutting edge logo design ideas but when the project is finished it doesn?t even look worthy of advertising on a Vegas strip. Don?t go overboard and choose too many elements for your logo. Look at the logo design of other companies who are well known, the logo is simple and inviting to look at but it doesn?t scream, ?look at me?. That?s because the designer has added perfect balance within the elements.

Tip: Pick out three objects that closely sum up your service or business for consideration.

#2. Print Versatility.

This is actually a common mistake that generally no one thinks of until it happens. Make sure that your logo is ?print friendly?. What are you going to do, if your logo is going to be in a magazine advertisement and the colors just blend in with the page and no one will notice your ad? Make sure that you either choose colors that are versatile or black and white isn?t a bad idea if you plan to do a lot of promotion using print ads. If your logo doesn?t look good in black and white, well it probably wont look good in other colors either.

Tip: Color printing is more expensive; creating your logo in black and white would save you some money if you choose to promote using promotional bumper stickers, caps, shirts or etc?

#3. Formats.

It?s a lot easier to have your logo ready for different situations, go ahead and tell your designer you need your file formats to be EPS (print ready), JPG and GIF for Internet ads or your own website. You?ll be glad you did!

Tip: It?s best that you get this done now rather than later on. If you don?t and you wish to advertise differently in the future, you?ll be ticked if you didn?t take care of this early on and your designer will most likely throw this in for free or next to nothing.

#4. Selecting A Designer.

A lot of people don?t take the time to select a knowledgeable designer and when they logo is completed, it?s not near the expectations they were dreaming of. This cannot be stressed enough?make sure your designer is a professional. Good designers have references, you can look over their previous work and most often a good designer will be glad that you ask.

Tip: Cheap doesn?t always mean crappy and expensive doesn?t always mean top notch. Don?t evaluate a designer by price. Just because he/she is expensive doesn?t always mean they?re good designers, don?t but your homework on researching them and get the facts.

#5. Communication.

Some designers live hundreds of miles away from the clients that they service while others just minutes down the street. It doesn?t matter where the designer is, if the two of you don?t have great communication established then it?s likely the project will take a long time to complete and it may be a bust. Without proper communication the designer cannot replicate your idea into a logo without communicating with you throughout the design process. A lot of times it?s necessary for your designer to e-mail you with samples, if you don?t answer them back and make a decision, what are they supposed to do?it?s your logo.

Tip: Make yourself readily available at all time to consult with the designer.

Implementing these tips, your logo should be just fine. These are all very important points that everyone needs to know. Logo design can be an easy process when everyone involved has experience, good ideas and a good eye for detail.
